After a many year absence I find myself back at the Beehive this evening. The hive as given up on it silly expansion into a three storefront bar. It is back to the single store front of my youth. The place still smells funy and the soft drinks are still over priced. I have no intention of bringing the knitting group back here The place is still lit like a dive bar. The bigs difference now is that everyone has their nose in a computer instead of a used book. I would like to think they are all on line reading the latest subversive literature. In reality they a probably playing angry birds.
Odd how some of the old faces are still around. The kids are gone. The might be still selling some beer here. For what ever reason the place is not as happy. I am not sure that i mind. It is just something that is different. They are making more food here and it smells like three kinds of terrible. It is not bad enough to make me leave but it might keep me from coming back. On some level I miss the pizza bagels and terrible egg salad. Actually the egg salad sandwiches were not that back. In face the last time I think I had one was five years ago when I was here.
The only up side is the lack of cigarettes. At least I do not think anyone is allowed to smoke in here anymore. Well I don't know. Be safe out there and keep your stick on the ice.

Knitting Stuff
By the way that is Apprentices Thurman, Wilson and Brimage. Aren't they cute this is their first knitting group. Walt is in the fore ground working on some socks I think.
This is my and another Apprentice Brimage. She is the youngest Apprentice in the Brigade. I think she likes the idea of knitting. The practice of knitting is another thing.
My wife was around there somewhere trying not to be associated with me. That is a common thing for her when we are out in public. Still, I don;t mind eating with a ski mask on while at restaurants. Although it is much harder to go into airports that way these days.
Well look at that I actually had some knitting news. Be safe out there and keep your stick on the ice.

We Got a Sign
I am close to finishing another hat that I have not taken pictures of. It is made from an acrylic. It is going to have a pom pom on a six stich peice of icord that comes out of the top of the hat.
The good people at Joseph Beths made us a sign for our knitting group. At the Bee Hive we were not allowed to have a sign. Look at it that put a dinosaur on it because we are the Sheep and Dinosaur knitting group. Good times.
Here is Walt mussing over a clown hat that he is starting. He even has a pattern for his hat. I am really a bit scared when clowns are that organised.
Carol and Jamie are going through untangling some yarn. It did get untangled. I know it does not look promising at this point.

First Meeting at Joseph Beth
The Joseph Beth was everything we hoped for. We met on the second floor around a fire place. We have a couch and padded arm chairs. This is compared to a used kitchen table and chair that have been salvaged from the garbage of the South Side.
I still love the Bee Hive. And it do not like the idea of going to a big chain. Still Scott and Steve {the owners of the Bee Hive} so not stress customer service in any way. I suppose it is easy to say that rude is cool. I looked at the Starbucks across the street and several other cafes in the area. The bottom line is that the chain store is willing to treat us well.
I like the sort of Independence that the Hive represents. Still, there is a line when people just need to be treated right.
On other fronts the class schedule for December is up on the web site. We are also working on January. Hopefully I will get it up on this blog soon.
Well I hope to see you all at Hive Knitting. Be safe out there and keep your stick on the ice.

Moving Hive Knitting
Well it appears that Hive Knitting will be moving to the Joseph Beth Book store on the South Side. I spoke to a manger at JoBeth's today and they will be getting back to me on Monday.
When we do move we are going to be moving the group up to 6:00PM because they close a bit earlier than the Bee Hive.
It sad to have to be moving the group. Still, we have had to bend over backwards to do the group. We bring our own lights are frequently the subject of rude people. I don't know. We should have given up on them months ago. Still, it used to be the cool place to hung out.
Poetry readings, musicians and all sorts of artists used to call it home. Now it is dungeons and dragons and people playing cards games with monsters. I suppose that officially makes it not the place the cool people are hanging out at.
I never claimed to be a cool person. I suppose cool people are people that others aspire to be. I have never really aspired to be anything other than the best me that i could be. Maybe that make me cool. Probably not, still, it is nice thought.
Well that leads us to the next question. I suppose we can no longer call it Hive Knitting. I suppose I will put it to the group. If anyone out there has a good name let me know.
Be safe out there and keep your stick on the ice.

A great day at Natural Stitches
Great fun was had at the Natural Stitches today. I got to build a Christmas tree shaped shelving unit for our December display. I just need to put up some Christmas lights and a few decorations. When I am done I will try and get someone with a camera to take a picture of it.
I must admit that I am liking selling yarn more than I thought I would. You get to meet people and hang around with yarn all the time.
On other front we are organising a Men's knitting night for December 14th. There will be a ten percent discount for men attending. It is nice to be doing something like this at the shop. I have consoled myself with the fact that there is not much a local male knitting community. Still, with events like this one we may be able to nurture one over time.
As I am working on the Knitting for War book I am thinking of other knitting books that I might want to write. I would like to write a real knitting book for men. Not something with a silly title and little content. But a real book aimed at at men that does not insult their intelligent. Yes I know it would not sell. Still a clown can dream can't he.
By the way I am still looking for pattern for the Knitting for War Book. I am going to put something on the side bar with a list of the patterns I still need. I continue to be bogged down on the how to knit section. I think I will have something that people can look at in another week or so. I may be overcritical on this section. I had not really thought about doing it when I started working on the book. I figured that I would concentrate on the who charity knitting thing and little else. Still enough people thought it was improtant that it should be included.
I am still kicking around the books about Brigadier Mason and Admiral Jefferson and his wife. I have found the old old short story that was about John Jefferson's first fleet command. I never did publish it. I have been working on it a bit. I will polish it up and send it to the Navy for approval. If they like it I will put it on the blog. Also it will be a relatively painless way to see if the plot and characters are up to snuff.
The main character in these book represent a couple organization that I care greatly about. Mason represents The Salvation Army which is my church. Even if I am not respected by them I still respect them. The other is the Navy. And quite frankly their daring during world war II may be the only reason that we are still here. When we look back at it now we tend to think it was foregone conclusion. The reality was there were several places that things could have gone the other way.
My grandfather served in Halsey's fleet during the war. He did not talk about it much. Still, it was apparent that the Navy made him much of the man that he was. I do hope to represent both of these organizations well.
On other knitting subjects. The Bee Hive Knitting Group is still up in the air. If I do not hear from them by noon Wednesday then I am calling Joe Beths. Knitting is supposed to be fun. Arguing with people over tables is not fun. And I am not going to do it any longer. Life is just too short. I will let people know via the Hive Knitting Yahoo thing if we change locations.
Well read me here and or see me at Natural Starches. Be safe out there and keep your stick on the ice.

Happy Me - The Last Hive Knitting Maybe

I have had several people say that my clown picture is not happy enough. This is one of the cartoon type pictures that we have been working on for the Brigade. I am thinking about going with a half bald blue wig. At the moment I am still coloring my hair white which turns to an interesting color. It also has me in my Salvation Army Uniform.
Any way if you like it better than the actual picture of me let me know. I am thinking of using it on the Ravelry as well.
Hive Knitting was a Disaster this evening. At the Bee Hive there is only one table that we can use. We have an agreement that we get this table. In order to make it better we bring our own lights. Well our table was taken over by Dr. Who game players. They refused to move even tough there were other table available. The staff claimed they could not honor their agreement with us because they were not aware of it.
If they do not call be tomorrow with an apology and a promise that will not happen again we will be moving the group elsewhere. I am think about Joseph Beth Book at the South Side Works. I do not want to go to Starbucks even though they are willing to host us.
I don't think the Joseph Beth's has a coffee shop. Still, they probably have better light and no smoking section. I know they would put us in their newsletter as well.
Anyway it is one of those things. If anyone knows if there is place on the South Side let me know.
Be safe out there and keep your stick on the ice.

More Ramblings
The gizmo is not letting me post picture so no Save Chicken for the moment. Anyway it is monday morning and it is off to the shop. It is odd working in a retail enviroment. True the shop has not opened. Still, I am used to having my clowning skills being the thing that is being sold. Now something else will be the object os my sales skills. It is not bad just different.
I am not in charge so I will not say when the shop is opening. I will say that it is coming together rather quickly. Everytime we leave we are amazed at the amount of stuff that is done. True we have a good crew. And there are several folks working at this enterprise. And many hands and all of that stuff.
Between the shop and the book I have not had much time to get to all of the knitting groups that i usually ghet to. I have not been to either of the two groups that I attend sporatically at Knit 1 for a couple weeks. I do need get back there.
The book is plugging along. I am working on a section on The Army's History of knitting. By the way if any of the Army Knitters out there know some are knitting sotries I would like to hear them. I know the Red Corss had a knitting kit that they gave to soilders in hospital. I am wondering if we did the same thing. i have not found any evidence of a kit as such. I will keep looking though. It does appear that the majority of our historical records we have are in Alexandria Virginia. And I do not have time to go down there before I would like to publish this thing.
Well I need tobe heading off to East Liberty. Be safe out there and keep your stick on the ice. And see you at the Bee Hive if your a Hive Knitter.

Rambling Around
It is another Monday and another Hive Knitting coming up. I do enjoy our little group. By the way if you happen to be around stop by. We still meet at the Bee Hive at 7:00 PM.
My hand is doing fairly well. As you can see I am back to typing. I do prefer entering in things this way. My grammar and spelling may not be perfect. Still, I can almost type as fast as as I can think.
I have been looking for a turtle character from bleach on line and have not found it. I also cannot find my cartoon knitting book that I have a couple years ago. It was from Japan and had a couple of neat dolls in it. Japanese knitting is an interesting thing thing. One of the people in the group was asking about it and i wish I had some more answers to give.
The book is moving along nicely. I am going to have to ask the Navy and The Salvation Army for their permissions. The Navy has an office that handles that sort of thing. I am not exactly sure how my church deals with it. I suppose I will ask someone at DHQ.
Be safe out there and keep your stick on the ice.

Raindbow Bag
A great day of knitting wass had at the Bee Hive Yesterday. I am working on a bag that I made on my Knitking. It is a messenger type bag made from Red Heart Mexican. I am trying to come up with unique things for the Clawn Brigade. This book bag may be just right for our various books and notebooks. I am considering making a felted version of this bag as the final thing. There would be much less work involved in lining it and the edges would be block rather than crocheted.
For this one I am not crcheting the edges as I normally would. I strips on the machie and I sewed them on. this appears to be doing farily well at keeping the edges from curling.
One of the clown did take some pciture of it. And as soon as I get them I will post them.
I have to run. We have a deck that needs some tending. Be safe out there and keep your stick on the ice.

Knitting at Home
It has been another good day here at the homestead. I have gone through another Chemo Cap and are once again working on Knitting Machine.
I have had a handful of people pass through the beginning class and should probably start to look toward doing projects on the machine. I have managed an ugly sweater that I did not even put together. I have had some success with a one piece vest. I think this will be the nest class that I should offer.
I am a bit disappointed that no one has taken a men’s knitting class at Knit 1. I have had several men take classes at the Bee Hive but none at Knit 1. It seems odd to me. I am sure there is some sort of reason but I do not know what it is. I have started writing up a lesson plan for the vest class. I am definitely going to ask to so a design your own bag class. I think the bag class should be popular.
I have a circular bottom draw string bag or a messenger type bag. The Messenger Bag is much like my ill-fated black bag from last year. With the exception of felting the bag, if you are into that, the either bag should be able to be made in one two hour class.
On other knitting front the second session of the Knitting Group in the South Hills now at the Boarders was another fun evening of knitting. The folks there continued to roll out the welcome mat and make us feel at home. Our space is around a fire place and there are tons of comfortable chair and rocking chairs. I simply cannot say enough about these people and great environment of their store.

Super Busy Begining of the Week
I have not had much time to post this week.
First thing first. I have been trying to get in tough with the district manager of the Barnes and Nobles with not the slightest bit of luck. Some say he is on vacation other say he is unavailable while still other claim he got my message and will be calling me this afternoon. Well it is clear they do not care. It would be nice if they were at a closer book store anyway.
I have been working on my book and it is progressing well. I am into the second chapter and things are going nicely.
The Monday group was awesome this week. Only one of the regular showed up and one sometimes person showed up. Everyone else was completely new. Some were in town at doing Act 40 classes and other were just passing through. It is also the first time that the group has been mostly female in nearly a year. A lively evening of knitting was had. It is amazimg to be able to take over the back third of the Bee Hive during the summer with a knitting group.
On the clown front there are now five shows on the books for us to do over the next two months. So like I said busy times.
I will post later today. Be safe out there and keep your stick on the ice.

Fun at the Bee Hive
A good evening was had knitting at the Hive. More Chemo caps took shape and fun was had by all. As always it was good to have en evening of knitting.
I had someone sign up for my Machine Knitting class tommarrow evening. It is good to be making progress on that front. I know the summer is a slow time for knitting. Still, it is nice to have some movement in the knitting classes.
I do have a bit of a headache so I will be turning in. Be safe out there.

The Gollum of Barnes and Nobles Strikes Again
The Barnes and Nobles at South Hills village removed the Knitting Group from the monthly flyer without asking the group. They have made it clear that they do not want us there by their actions. The last time we had a problem with them was when they had an issue and did not bring it up with us until it was too late. The same thing happened this time. The last manager there did not allow this sort of thing to happen.
The odd thing is that they think they are very reasonable by allowing the group to meet at a time when they cannot attend. They have hassled them about everything from chairs to time. They should just have a backbone and say they do not want groups to meet there.
I know if they treated us like this at the Bee Hive we would move somewhere else. I do know the leader of this group will be looking across the street at Boarder and at the Joseph Beths's on the South Side. I personally vote for the South Side since it is near me. Still, outside in a parking lot would be more welcoming than the South Hills Village Barned and Nobles.
By the way this is for Celtic Queen.

World Tour Report Denny's in Monroeville
One of the problems with visiting all of the local knitting groups is that I have already visited many of them. On Wednesday I had the opportunity to visit a agroup that I had not been t yet.
This was the Knitting Group that meets on the Fifth monday or Wednesday at the Denny's in Monroewville.
This is another fairly exclectic group with people from various backrounds. The discussion went everywhere from knitting to religous and there was not the slightest friction within the group. Aubjects that would often cause fist fight were taken with a grain of sand and even made light of.
This always a pleasant thing to come across. I have come across groups that are not welcoming to outsiders. And I have also come across groups that claim to be and are not really. This group truely is a nice surprise for a stranger.
Something else that I noted about this group was the experince level of the average. Not to boast. But generally when i go to a knitting group I feel that I am in middle to upper half of the knitting groups as far as experince goes. At this particular group most of the people there were much more experinced than I am. I always enjoy hanging around more experince knitters. One can learn so much.
One of the reasons we have our knit together at The Bee Hive is so that we can haave food while we are knitting. This was the first Knit Together that I got a Hamburger at. What is not to like about that. Granted most there had salads. Fortunately being male I am not quite up to my idea weight yet and don't have to worry about such things.
Well if you have the time make sure you get out there and visit these folks a fun time is had by all.
As always visit the folks at www.pittsburghknitting.com for a complete list of local knitting groups.

Short Posts
It is less than a a week before out first full show. I have been practicing with every spare moment. That and making chemo caps. Anyway life moves alone.
My brigade is think about doing the male version of the race for the cure. We would only have a month to make caps. Still, those are the punches.
Another odd twist has entered my journey in knitting. My mother has asked me to teacher her knitting. Time and time again the narrative of people learning to knit includes their mother teaching them. Not learning from clowns and then teaching their mothers. Still what can one?
I would like to note that classes at the bee Hive are plugging along and interest in classes at Knit 1 is growing even if slowly. We have several guests to the Hive Knitting group. A new woman who lies in Mt. Oliver and the famed male mystery knitter stopped by to work on The Marley. All and all an eventful day was had.
The Hive Knitting group is also another odd twist. With the addition of Tom and the male members of the Brigade who come regularly this group is now mostly male. To the best of my knowledge this is the only time I have been part of a group that is mostly male. I know there are male knitting groups in other larger cities. Still, I have never heard of a group being open to all and being mostly male by accident. Not that i am saying that male knitting groups are closed to women. the only male knitting group that i attended was in Toronto years ago. And even though it was billed as a male knitting group girl Friends and wives often out numbered the men. I don't know how that worked but it.
I would like to note that we will still be meeting Monday the 28th. Also we will be celebrating our 1 year anniversary party at The Hive. There will be a cake what more can you want. I would like to invited every one that come sporadically or who has not come for a while to come. i good time will be had by all.
Well be safe out there and keep your stick on the ice.

Clown Knitting
A good day was had a hive Knitting yesterday. I finally started on chemo caps and our prayer shawls made much progress. I am confident it will be done for this week end.
I added my first article to KnitWiki yesterday. I stuck with a subject that I know mainly clown knitting. This article will have several parts starting with long Scarves. There are fewer than a couple hundred articles on this site so they need a lot of work. I have notes that are several blogs that I visit that have people who have written books. Myself I keep threatening to write books and have notes and research on many. This is a worthwhile project.
At the end of May we are going to celebrate the first anniversary of Hive Knitting. For some reason I thought it started in May. Others have corrected me and told me it started in Mid April. Well, a cake is a cake and it is just as nice in May as it is in April. So the last Monday in May will be the party. It will be at the Bee Hive at 7:00PM as usual. everyone stop by there will be a big cake.
Well I have to get going. I will post more later. Be safe out there and keep you stick on the ice.

Holy Where did all of These People Come From Batman?
Over a thousand people visited here today. That about what I get every couple weeks. I have also received a couple dozen email questions. All of this stems from a chance meeting with Stephanie Pearl-McPhee.
She Cranked on The Marley a bit and apparently thought this was all interesting enough to put on her blog. Thus the huge up take in my daily readers. This brings me back to the questions. There have been many and they fall into several categories.
Once upon a time I promised that I would answer any comment left on the blog or email sent to me. I guess I never though more than three people would read this thing at any one time. So here goes. If I don't answer your question satisfactorily please let me know. I have grouped some questions and answer for brevity's sake.
Question 1: Are you Single, Married, Gay? Married to a woman. Once upon a time that would have sounded like an odd way to answer that question. It is a brave new world.
Question 2: What is The Marley? Why the Name? The Marley is what clowns call a Long Scarf. It will be made from 200 skeins of 3oz. worsted weight Canadiana verigated yarn. It is named The Marley because those 200 skeins of yarn will be turned into icrod and then knit into the scarf. The icrod is thought to look like dread locks. Ddancer made up the name. It is the tradition of our Clown Brigade to name every scarf that is longer than 100 feet long. We currently have two long scarves. The Barry and The Judy.
Question 3:What do you do with a Long Scarf? This is clown prop that is used for various routines. There is walking through a mall with a long scarf such a pictured here. There is also a tug of war routine and pulling it off someone and making them spin like a top.
Pictured is The Judy. She is named for Judy Garland and was named by CarlaK. The name works on several levels.
I am the clown in front. Behind me is Segeant Knit Whit {who knits during our stage shows}. Behind him is Sergeant Major Jimbo. We are in our humor Therapy costumes and not our Salvation Army Uniform costumes we use during our stage shows.
Question 4: Isn't using a machine cheating? HMMMMMM....... I just posted something like that. The answer is that you bet your sweet bippy it is. We have two hundred skeins of yarn that need turn into icrod. We would be completely insane if we did that by hand.
Clowns as knitter are what most would call project knitters. Our goal in life is to make a particular thing. Of our two scarves that we have one is very old, The Barry. And The Judy is a springy scarf that is good for some routines but not others. The Marley will be stiffer and better for the routines that The Judy is not. Our clown Brigade is one year old and we still have many things to build and make. We must do some of this very quickly because it will be used in the next couple months for our Spring shows.

Question5: What is with you sign off? Well be safe out there is fairly obvious. It is dangerous world out there and we must keep our head about us. Keeping you stick on the ice refers to Hockey. Namely that you care supposed to keep your stick bellow your knees. If you do not this is called high sticking. This is not a good thing for many reason. The primary reason is that it very tempting to clobber someone with your stick {see picture}.
It is mainly a reference to fair play. I lived in Canada for a while and am a hockey.
Question 6: What is a clown knitting group like? Well is is like any other knitting group with the addition of balloon animals and small children. This is me in the back actually making the swatch for The Marley. Our group is not exclusively for clowns. We have a clown practice just prior to our knitting group. So sometimes there is overlap. Actually the only real difference is that we have more men in our knitting group. Be sides that there are few differences except for the occasional odd project. Only about half our our knitting group is made up of clowns. The rest are just Pittsburghers that come to our group. It is open to the public and meets every Monday at 7:00PM at the Bee Hive.
Question 7: Donations - We have a couple projects we are working on. First is knitting items for our homeless shelters. Basically any knit or Crochet items or yarn can be dropped off at Knit 1 in Squirrel Hill. Those items are given to residents at our family shelter and Men's Shelter. We also have a knit together there on Sundays at 1:00PM.
Donations - Monetary- Several folks have asked how they can support our humor Therapy program. These donations may be mailed to our Corps: The Salvation Army Steel Valley Corps P.O. Box 395 Homestead, PA 15120. Please make Checks out to The Salvation Army Steel Valley Corps and put Clown Brigade in the memo section.
If anyone is interested in attending service at out Corps {Church} we are located at 104 E. Ninth Ave. in Homestead. Church services at at 11:00 AM. I will post our next round of shows once we have all of the locations locked in.
Well that covers most of it. I thank everyone for stopping by. If anyone decides to link here let me know so I can add you to my link list as well. Once again thanks for dropping by.
Be safe out there and keep your stick on the ice.

Good Times at the Waterfront in Homestead
A good time was has at the Waterfront even if one of the Matrons of the group was not with us this afternoon. I shlept over to the Waterfront with the Knitking and puttered around with it until I got it working. When we got it back to the Corps we knocked out a few rectangular peices that will be used for one of the Blankets that we are making for out shelter. All and all it was a great day knitting and a good way to build upper body stregnth.
We were hoping to have the once monthly knit together for our shelter at the Bee Hive. Unfortunately we discovered at the Barnes and Nobles that the Knitking does not like coffee shop tables. The Hive has mostly kitchen tables and I do not know how many we will be able to clamp the knitting machines onto. When we got to the Corps we were easily able to bolt it to our tables.
I clamp my Bond down with a couple quick grip clamps and it would be able to be attached to anything. Next monday I will have to take them both down to the Hive. There are severalrectangular tables there.
If that does not work out we will have to look at other places. Maybe the Corps in Homestead or Knit 1 in Squirell Hill. Good times we be had no matter where we meet.
Be safe out there and keep your stick on the ice.
