I digress.......

It is Saturday and I am heading out to look for an MP3 player. My old CD player is on it's last legs and I should probably get with the new technology. Even though I use a computer I tend to update things slowly. Most of what I use the computer for is to write books and post in this blog.

Last week I got my first flicker account because that appears to be the only way to post pictures to Ravelry. I must say that i am pleased with the Ravelry. I am not sure i am as excited as some. Still, it is a neat idea and I think it's time has come.

You would think I would remember the contents of this blog. Still, I do not really read this blog. Which is odd. Perhaps there would be fewer misspelling and grammer problems if I read the blog. But I digress.

Anyway I have gotten a few patterns from people from The Knit List and Ravelry. A few more patters and I think i will have a book.

I did ask what people thought about having a how to knit section in the book. Half the people that emailed me were for it and the other half were against. So i ask some friends. And I should not have asked an even number of people. Half were for and half were against.

So it is back to the drawing board. I am going to write a chapter on how to knit. At this point none of the patterns in the book have crochet. So there will be none of that. I will probably put a link to a site that has a good how to crochet section.

It is truly odd how things progress. When this blog was started it was a way to post about odd things and to find other male knitter. The finding other male knitters in my area has not worked out that well. I have posted about a lot of odd stuff.

Now it is a tool in writing a book. Yes it is very odd how things progress.

On other fronts there has been some movement on the Army thing. I am told that I was asked to do something before I could be considered as a candidate for training. This was a surprise because i had never been asked to do that thing. It has been several weeks since this revelation and no other movement has been made.

I do not mind being the black sheep. I have found that many circus clowns do not respect organised Christian religion. Historically good Christians have been against Circus folk as messengers of sin. Then again many silly thing have been said by good Christians over the years.

Personally I see organised religion as the only way to deal with the really big problems. So it is not fair for those that have been hurt by the church to say it is a bad thing. You cannot complain about hunger, suggering and poverty and then say there is nothing you can do about it because you don't like the church. That is a bigger cop out then the church not liking different people.

That was the main reason I felt called to the Army. The scriptures talk of unconditional love and helping people. And when I was on the road I was with one exception always welcome at a Salvation Army Corps. This was not true of my home church which was about fifty fifty. And the reality of that is more a small town suspicion of different things.

There was no vast church conspiracy to keep out the Circus Folk. Just a group of people trying to protect their daughters from the heathen hordes of jugglers, tumblers and mimes. By the way you simply cannot trust those mimes. Everything they say about them is true, but I digress.

So I continue to wait for a resolution to this problem that does not appear to exist from my vantage point. I will keep you posted.

Listening to Women Talk About Men Knitting.

On the Knit List there has been several people talking about Guys knitting. The Conversation started by asking if Richard Dawson really knit. I could not find out. I did leave some messages at some Richard Dawson fan boards. We will see if any of them get back to me. I don't know where he lives. If I find out I will sit out in front of his house until I see him knitting or get arrested.

Bellow in italics is the post I put up for approval. Bellow are my other recommendations that I knew would not make the list.

Rosey Greer did do needles point. I have no idea if Richard Dawson Knit. his bio doesn’t say.

If you are knitting group of women who want men to show up your right, Girl Talk is a bad thing. Ladies how many of you want to sit around and listen to Dale Ernhart Jr. turning left stories. There are some subjects that are simply male or female. And once upon a time knitting groups were called Stitch and Complain and that has come back again. And what did a bunch of women complain about, men.

And as a man that has attended dozens of knitting groups there are several that I have not gone back to because it was a group therapy session with knitting. There is nothing wrong with that. If you’re a group of friends that gets together in a coffee shop that is cool. There are also a couple of female knitting group that I have been told at the door that men should not be there. It also scares that daylights out of men when several women are feeding children while knitting.

By the way if you are in all female group that does not want men to attend do not be afraid to put that on your poster.

If you want to attract men to your knitting group there are several things you can do.

Snacks that are bad for you.

The occasional Baseball conversation.

And lost of cool knitting stuff.

If the group is about knitting than a couple guys will show up eventually. The bottom line is that men are going to be a small minority in knitting circles. No one likes to be outside their comfort zone. In another couple decades if knitting stay as popular as it is now then there will be droves of male knitters.

Women if you want me to show up don't spend more than 20 percent of the time talking about women stuff. Breast feeding is also a scary thing for men. I am not getting into that. Men know what I mean.

Pigs in a blanket are a good thing, Hot wings, Ranch Dressing, Coke or Pepsi, Pizza, Jeff Gordon, Bruce Springsteen, the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders and or a Stephen Segal Movies are good ways to attract men to a group.

This may sound like a silly thing to be thinking about. Men dominate so much in the world. Why not let them take second place in the knitting world. Well those that read this thing on a regular basis know that I will go on about the most inconsequential things at great length.

Well it has been an hour since I placed my post and it has not shown up on the Knit List. At least my important observations have shown up on my blog.

Ravelry - Yay

I was invited to Ravelry today. And only six hours after I have joined I have five friends. That is nearly twice as many Friends as I have in the real world. So I am excited about that.

This was a neat thing and I am glad that I sign up three year ago to get through the waiting list. Actually it does appear that they are working hard to avoid many pit falls of new and popular websites. I have put up two things in the Forum type thing. With the exception of the Yahoo thing for my knitting group I have not used this sort of thing before. I suppose that the Knit List is that sort of thing. Although the restriction on that do not appear to be in Ravelry.

I know the people that are involved in this already know about these neat features. Still, it did get my attention the amount of stuff that you can so on this site. I have to admit that I was not terribly impressed with the progression of the Knit List and a few of the Internet thing that are out there about knitting.

One thing that i am tickled about is that i get to use just Zeeppo as my ID. For some reason there is a drunk guy who has been using Zeeppo on things like blogger yahoo and various other places. So I frequently have to add stuff to my clown name to use it on line. When I have million of dollars I will buy all of the Zeeppo names out there. IT will be the first step in my take over of the world. Still, that involves mechanical kangaroos and blaming stuff on Australia. But i digress.

Deffending the Boye

Long time readers know that I am frequently edited or deleted by the Knit List Moms. For this reason I don't usually post unless it is something I am an expert at or is something I feel passionately about.

Such a subject has been making it's rounds on the list. Namely that Boye Needles are junk. First off this is simply not true.

This falls into two categories. People that hate metal needles and people that have trouble with their interchangeable needles.

First off if you hate metal needles you have no business offering an opinion on Boye Needles. It is like asking Mary Todd Lincoln what she thought of the play.

Moving along that brings me to the interchangeable needles. I have a super old set that has been inherited from the clown that taught me to knit. I have no idea how old it is. I am fairly sure it is older than me. I use it at home for experimental stuff and should probably get some new chores so I can have a more complete set.

I am considering getting a new set because I do not have a complete set. Also it appears that the Boye needles have a wider range than most.

The main detraction is that the needles separate from the chords. I have not had this problem. Maybe I tighten them enough I don't know. I have used Denise needles and had the tip come off when they are not clicked all the way in. The bottom line is that it looks as if this can be done with any set of needles.

Perhaps they are just a more manly set of needles.

Now this may seem like a pointless thing to argue over. The thing is that people who hate these needles are offering free advice. I have come across the same thing with Knitting Machines. A hand knitter who hates machines cannot give an opinion on Machines. Yarn snobs should not give thoughts on Red Heart.And needles snobs should not be telling people something is terrible that they hate.

To be fair to the Moms I have included the entire entry. I do find it interesting that the strongest defence of the Boye Needles is not allowed to have anyone comment on their comment.

momnote: I think this discussion is turning out to be one of those 'let's agree to disagree' type. There will always be personal preferences for needles (among other things). No single brand of needle is 'right or wrong', just simply preferred or not. Let this post be the last of the "debate".------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------
I have been attending knitting groups for several years now. And every time that I get out my old set of Boye Straits there is almost always a negative comment about them. I have never heard of a brand that takes as many shots as the Boye Brand. The truely sad thing is that many of the inovations that we now love in addi turbo, denise or other companies were first done my Boye. It is easy to slap around the first company to do something. Still, they should have received some more respect from the knitting community for it.In addition they are the most widely availible needle out there. This has made them the gateway to the knitting world for many generations of knitters.You can always find fault with anything. Still, how many of us first learned knit with these needles. Be nice to Boy Needles. There would not be as many knitters or the variety of needles without them.

Promise of a Good Knitting Day

Anyway today looks like it is going to be a great day for knitting. My first order of business is to build a knife throwing board. Ahhh it is good to be building clown stuff again. I know that it is not like the old days, still, it is nice. My only regret about the up coming show is that we will not be able to do the cannon act. Like many church stages our has a modesty screen. This little wall has been hammered into the stage and cannot be removed without destroying it. At the moment the church does not have it in the budget to build a new removable one. So we are stuck with this old one. And no one can see the cannon over the wall.

Of well, what can you do? As for the great day of knitting, my Chemo cap obsession continues. Also there is the South Hills Knitter this evening. My wife and are bother going our there and a good time will be had by all. I will also get a chance to meet with most of the rest of my knitting teachers for the festival. At this point I figure I have about two thirds of the classes nailed down. My post on The Knit List produced several new teacher And their class lists. Well only one has sent their class list at this time, but I am not picky. Even if it yields only three new teachers I am happy.

Also I Am looking for the Crochet and Spinning equivalent of The Knit List. If anyone has ideas of where I should post let me know.

It is Really Hard to Find Title for These Posts Sometimes

The last week of knitting has been busy with preparation for the show this Sunday. By that way our show will be at 6:00 PM at the Salvation Army in Homestead PA. If you are interested email me and I will send you details. It is a free show and fun should be had by all.

Well the chemo Caps keep coming. I have finished five since Sunday. Not bad for a fairly full work week just before a show. A couple double balls were cranked for The Marley and there is at least one super ball to be stitched together. What more could one want?

I continue to to be edited on The Knit List. I put up another post about the festival to see if they will allow it to be posted. Anyway I was posting that we are looking for more teachers and volunteers for the Fall Fiber Festival.

We are also going to need Yarn Angels to help with Knitting Crochet and Spinning Classes. We are looking to have around Thirty classes so we are going to need an awful lot of help. Yarn Angels with assist the teachers with students who need extra help during the classes.

I am very happy with the way that the teaching staff is shaping up. We have several excellent teachers already. I only wish I would have the time during the festival to take a few classes. That is the only draw back or organising such a thing. One does not get to enjoy it as much as someone that bought a ticket would.

I have come to the conclusion that I am definitely a project knitter. I have note that many people have to knit on a regular basis and are constantly hungry to do something new. Myself I am knitting the most when I have something that needs to be done. I am sure that it is a point that means very little in the grand scheme of thing.

I am pleased to note that The Knit list people finaly posted a comment that I have left. Granted I did have to leave out the location and what the Fiber Festival would benefit, still, it is a start if nothing else.

It does make me curous why religion is such are hand thing for some people. i understand that most of the death and distruction that has taken place historically has been in the name of God. Still, that does not explain why it is such a hard thing for so many people in this country. I also realise that we are for lack of a better term involved in a sort of Holy War.

None of this explains why a group of people would be so picky that they could not even have the name of a church listed on their site. If I had another alternative I would take it. I even tried to join the Christian Knitter to find a like minded internet group. It turn out that I am not Christian enough for them. I really wish I was Christian enough or secular enough to be in one group or the other. What a weird place to be in.

As stated more than a year ago part of the reason I started this blog was to look at the knitting world on the Internet. The role that sub groups play in the whole enterprise is fascinating. I am always amazed at how something as simple as knitting can be used and transformed in so many ways. We may all be kniters but we bring the distinctions we have in life to our craft. That may sound like a simple thing to say. It may even be an obvious.

Well the wonders of internet aside this is a valuble asset.The festival that we are trying to set up would probably not be possible without the internet.

As I continue to ramble on about this an that I also have a kitten update. The critters are doing well. My wife has found homes for the kitties. They will probably be ready for their new homes in a month and a half or so. Back kitten is much larger than grey kitten. Grey kitten is eating well enough and if growing and healthy looking. Black kitten eats so much more than gray kitten though. She is much larger than grey kitten.

I am think about opening a Kitten Orphanage. People could come to my house and the little fur balls would line up hoping for a family to tak them. I would be like something out oliver twist. Cute little critters would waddle up to my chair waiting for their bottle. I would let them have as much as they wanted. a small herd of happy little kittens would bring me my slippers and the evening paper. And I would read my little freinds bed time stories.

Maybe I am thinking too much about this. Well that tends to be my way. Be safe out there and keep your stick on the ice.

Who's your Mommy?

Does anyone know how to get in touch with the head Knitlist Mom?

I continue to be frustrated that they will not post my items half the time. I have read other posts about knitting groups in other area but they will not post items about the group at our church. In addition I have not seen a post for my last couple replies to messages.

In addition I have yet to see a rule page that prohibits me from putting up the posts that I want to. I understand that this is the Mom’s Page and not really a public forum. Still how much dignity and respect goes into something that will not share the rules? Also how much respect is there for male knitters if there are no Dads?

I am not angry I am just disappointed. It would be nice if I were allowed to post about groups just like other people.

Failure to Communicate

Both of my long time readers will know that I do not generally do grumpy here. There is a lot for a male to be grumpy about in the knitting world if one gives into that sort of thing. Still, if you have sense of humor about some foolishness then it is easy to ignore or even find the quirks of the world around you.

Starting last Friday there have been a couple grumpy things that have passed through my corner of the knitting world. The first was a rather curt manager at the Barnes and Nobles at South Hills Village. The group there has around a dozen or so members that are very friendly. In the last couple months they have been moved around the store and have had their furniture changed several times.

Last Friday we were informed that these were subtle ways to tell us that we were annoying the rest of the guests and we were not taking the hint. Firstly moving furniture in a sales space tells me that you are trying to maximize your floor space. In no way would I take as a personal message from the staff. Wouldn’t it be more effective to tell the offending party that they are in the way. Instead it has convinced several of the group members that they need to talk to Boarders about holding the group there.

Well many of the group members are now calling the head manager. Being that it is not my group I would usually not get involved. Still, this assistant manage was especially annoying. In addition my wife attends this group with me so I am sure we have spent hundreds of dollars in this store. At the very least I am going to save my purchases for when I am at another Barnes and Nobles. I suppose that sort of thing does not effect a corporation. Still, if you annoy enough people there are consequences.

I will get back this later this week after I have talked with the Head Manager.

My next disappointment is The Knit List. At one point they were an integral part of the knitting community on line. Then they became very petty and had multiple on line arguments. It would appear that they have most of this under control now. It had been years since I gave them another chance last month. They did look as if they had improved a great deal. I am sure that had a lot to do with The List Moms laying down the law.

Yesterday I tried to place a post about our charity knitting even at The Army this Friday. It is as follows:

I was informed by a Mom that this could not be posted because they were burned in the past. This is another situation were communicating in an adult manner could save hurt feelings. This is not posted in the rules. Actually the rules are fairly vague about many things on The Knit List. Many people post about KALs on The Knit List. So it would appear that it is up to what ever Mom is on duty.

As for being burned. I understand that there are dozens of no name charities out there and some take advantage of people. Most of these little charities that you have never heard of are great. Still, in this situation that does not apply. If one wanted to check if we were really doing something they have all the information they need to confirm it. With a little effort you could call The Salvation Army in Homestead and speak to the person in charge. Or if you did not trust them you could call our local headquarters in Pittsburgh.

What is at the root of this on The Knit List? I don’t know. I do know that there are no List Dads. Most of the snarkiest situations I have noticed in knitting have been around women who feel threatened by a male knitting. This is often just someone that has not seen a male knit and they do not know how to take it. This usually disappears when I have been around an area for a while. At least it goes away where I am concerned. It may still happen to other men. My LYS , Knit 1, had this to a very small degree when I first went thee a couple years ago. No one threw me out or told me that I should not be there. There was simply one or two comments from staff that is no longer there. I have noted that there are now a handful of men shopping there. For the most part I and my clowns are the only ones that knit there. I am sure that this has something to do with the stigma that men fell around knitting in public.

No one wants to have someone tell them they are a weirdo. Clowns take this as a mark of Honor. So I can see why we are not phased by this. Still, at most the groups that I go to I and the males in my Brigade are usually the only men there. Oh I am sure this will loosen up over time. I do find it interesting that only group I go to that has men who have attended from outside my Brigade is my knitting group on the South Side. Perhaps men need ownership of knitting. At this point we are at best an oddity. In no way do we have control of our knitting destiny. This is especially true on The Knit List and the average LYS.

I have noted something very interesting. Men will buy yarn at Walmart. As they pick up the jumbo packet of tubes sock and 50 pack of batteries they will cruise through the yarn isle and throw a few skeins in the cart. This could be them being good husbands and boyfriends. Still, on more than one occasion I have watched them compare colors. This is the action of a person creating something not someone that has an item to check off a list.

Men are still left out in the cold in the knitting world. And anyone that wants to attract male customers has to listen to men. Anyone that wants to be relevant in the Knitting World in the future is going to have to include men. Sorry to say that is not The Knit List. Oh it has lots of interesting posts and neat stuff is going on there. I just wonder how relevant they are going to be as long as they stick to the female dominated thing.

I have been digging around in my library about knitting as well this morning. I have come across several book by EZ, Debbie Stroller and The Yarn Harlot. A few years ago when Debbie Stroller’s first book came out it was a slap in the face to male knitters ever where. I own it and it is a fairly good beginner book. It is not my taste as far as technique goes. Granted I strayed from the conventional path a long time ago. I understand than males have been unfair to women for the lion share of history. Still, I am not even thirty. I have not been alive long enough to have taken part in most of these sins against women.

I will say that The Yarn Harlot’s books, or the ones I have read, are respectful of men. Still, they are more concerned about knitting and don’t appear to have a political axe to grind. And I am not just saying that because she gave me some nice PR recently. I was past basic knitting when both of the first books came out. The Harlot’s books have continued to grow and have included increasingly more difficult techniques. And I have found some interesting stuff in her books about her travels and knitting culture in general. For the most part the Stroller’s books are all beginning knitter books.

What does this have to do with there not being more men in knitting. These two authors are a microcosm of the fight in the knitting world. On one hand you have the female dominated knitting world. On these other you have one that is open to change. Men may not be fully integrated into knitting yet. Still, I may see it in my life time.

The Knit List & Black Yarn

Once upon a time when the only knitting thing on the Internet was the knit list I joined it. No one was working on the sorts of things that I usually work on. In addition there was a lot of sniping at one another. At one point I don't think you could go through a day with out some one saying something incredibly rude about someone else.

Well no one is knitting things like I do. I wasn't really expecting anyone to be knitting sweaters for three people or knitting a scarf you can tie up a tug boat with. By the way no one better trying tethering their ship to a dock with one of my long scarves. There are some things that clowns will fight over.

Any way I have received sixty or seventy messages from the Knit List. Each one of them was polite and about knitting. The knitting world has either grown or they have a really good group of List Mom's.

Also after my first post visitors to this blog jumped. This is a good thing as well. I have not seen many knitting blogger with a link to the Knit List. Do the List people not get along with the blog people? For a while I thought The Knit List had gone away.

And is it The Knit List like The Salvation Army with a capital The or just the Knit List?

Also I have been knitting some black socks on 2 mm needles. I have been using a nice wool and acrylic mix. It is a supper wash wool so I don't have to worry about washing it.

Anyway Ewe can Knit Down Town Pittsburgh carries it and a nice cotton sock yarn as well. It's great to have a source for the yarns you like.

Way off in Left Feild - Your All Wrong - I Want to be Knit List Mom

Today was a moderately busy day. I worked on my socks some more and the dialogue for a couple routines for the Brigade. I also made some little paper furniture for Sunday. It is odd to be teaching Jr. Soldiers again. For those outside the Army that is a training program for young people in The Salvation Army. We mostly do Jesus stuff, although there is some Army tradition and history in there as well. We are doing the Tabernacle



Our men's club is also getting ready to do some open airs. This is another Army tradition that we do not see enough of today. Basically it is holding a church service outside. We do not hold Sunday service outside we hold an additional service outside. It is nice to be doing them again as well.



Any way onto some knitting stuff. One thing that I noticed the last couple months is that people who have free pattern sites have links for one kind of item. I have not noticed a single site that has all forms of knitting in the same way that there are a couple good juggling sites. Perhaps I am just missing them. If anyone knows about one of these mega sites let me know. If not does anyone know a good free website service out there. I was even poking around at Yahoo's Geocities today considering building my own super site. If there is such a thing I would like to link to it.



Also I have noticed a strange tendency I have when knitting socks. Firstly I was taught how to knit them toe up. It was not until I went out into "The Real World" of knitting that I found that most people knit socks backwards. How do you all try them on? You have much more faith than I do. The truly strange thing I do is that I shift the stitches from one needle to the next when I am only using four needles. For some reason this feels and seems right to me. I cannot find any reference any where why one would do this.



It has been a couple years since I have knit socks and I do not know why I was taught to do this. Over the last couple years I have started a couple pairs of socks but have not gotten above the toe where I start doing this. I do not recall being taught this. Still, this is just how I do it and always remember doing it this way. I even emailed a couple of the clowns I know who were taught me to knit. I asked them why we do this and the one that emailed me back just said it is the way it is supposed to be. This is truly weird I think. Although I have nagging feeling that everyone else on the planet is wrong. This must be how EZ felt about English Style knitters. Fear not I will not+ begin going around telling everyone that they are wrong. Even if everyone is wrong I will keep that opinion to myself. And if anyone has a good reason why I am knitting socks like that let me know. It is nice to have reasons to be right.



Another thing I have forgotten about socks is that they are an obsession nearly as great as a good hundred foot long scarf. Although on smaller scale. That is of course unless you have really big feet. I do have big feet for a person under six foot tall. Still, they are not so big that they rival a long scarf in knitting effort. I should probable digress at this point. And if I think I should stop now that probably means I should have stopped a couple paragraphs ago. Like I probably should not compare myself to EZ or say everyone on the planet is wrong.

Also I have asked to join what I think is now what The Knit List used to be. It appears that it is now a Yahoo group. I don't imagine they have any more clowns on The Knit List than they did years ago. Still, I have some fond memories of it. I also have a couple not so fond memories of it. Still, since I can't join all of those inactive rings that you see in the right hand column. I might as well join something I think is fairly active. It is like the KT Tunstall song. Suddenly I do see why it means so much to me. I once had a great connection with the knitters around me. They were all just like me. Now when I go out to a knitting group they are not like me.

It is not that anyone that I now knit with is not a pleasure to be around. For some reason on an uncontious level it was important to be a part of something. I suppose that I am too far out in Left Field to be an integral part of any group. That is the odd thing, I have always thought I played well with others. The whole knitting thing does have me a bit down. In clowning I did well. Not being able to find a place to teach knitting I suppose has been more of a blow to my ego than anything else.

And how come no one told me Kt Trustall is from Scotland? There should have been a memo or something. It there are any other cool Scottish singers out there? Let me know. Just so I make sure I haven't missed anyone. Oh an go see her My Space page:

I imagine I am about seven years behind the times. Still, I always knew that the My Space thing was there. I also knew there were music people on it. I really like going to websites that have music embedded in them. If I made music I would embed it in this blog. That is if I knew how to do that. By the way she does a really cool version of "I Want You Back".

I just got the automated email from The Knit List Moms. Wow, I wanted to be a Knit List Mom when I first started looking at knitting on the Internet. It looks as if all Moms are still women. Well I imagine they were always women. I mean that none of them are men. From their form letter they still look fairly exclusive. I will probably not be able to become a Mom. Oh well.

I am beginning to think that I should write an out line for some of these entries. As I sit here looking at my card stock version of the Ark of the Covenant It makes me think about Charity Knitting at Knit 1 on Sunday. If you happen to be in the Squirrel Hill area stop by.
